Things you should know about Nigeria’s Chief Judge, CJN, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammad

Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammed was born on 31 December, 1953.

Justice Tanko is from Doguwa – Giade, a local government area in Bauchi State, North-east, Nigeria.

He is a Nigerian jurist and Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

Ibrahim tanko was formerly a Justice of the Nigerian courts of appeal.


The 18th CJN attended Government Secondary School, Azare, where he obtained the West Africa School Certificate in 1973

He got his bachelor’s degree in Law from Ahmadu Bello University in 1980.

He went further to obtained Masters degree from the same university (ABU) in 1984

The jurist also got Doctorate (PhD) degrees from the same university in 1998.

 Tanko’s Career

Tanko began his career as Islamic lawyer in 1982, after his Call to Bar in 1981, the same year he graduated from the Nigerian Law School.

In 1989, Tanko was appointed as Chief Magistrate of the High Court of Federal Capital Territory.

The same position he held till 1991 when he became a Judge at the Bauchi State Sharia Court of Appeal.

The CJN served as Bauchi state Sharia court of Appeal for two years before he was appointed to the Bench of the Nigerian courts of appeal as Justice in 1993.

He held this position for 13 years before he was appointed to the Bench of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 2006 but was sworn in on January 7, 2007.

He took over from CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen, who was suspended from office over alleged corrupt practices.

Tanko was acting CJN from  January 25 till July 25th 2019, he was appointed on 25th July 2019 as the substantive CJN.

Tanko Muhammad’s appointment as Chief Justice of Nigeria was confirmed by the Senate.
