Court sentences Orji Kalu to 12 years in jail because of N7.65bn fraud

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday sentenced the ex-Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, to 12 years in jail after he was found guilty of 39 counts of N7.2 billion fraud and money laundering.

Kalu was charged alongside with Jones Udeogo, the state Commissioner for Finance during his reign as the governor of Abia State.

Daily Tells understands that Kalu was a PDP governor for eight years and latter  contested as the President under the Party he formed (Progressive Peoples Party – PPP).

Kalu moved to APC when EFCC made  case against him, his trails was stalled but according to President Muhammadu Buhari political mantra, to fight against corruption, Kalu’s case was not stopped.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu is a member of All Progressive Party, Serving in the senate as the Chief whip of the Senate of the federal republic of Nigeria.

Kalu is the owner of Slok Nig. Ltd., which was also a defendant in the suit. The company was used for the fraudulent act.

While Kalu and his company were convicted on all the 39 counts charges, Udeogo was also found guilty of 34 counts charges.

While delivering the judgement, Justice Mohammed Idris sentenced Senator Orji Kalu to 12 years in prison for N7.65 billion fraud.

The judge in his ruling also ordered that Slok Nig. Ltd. should wound up its assets and the federal government should forfeits its assets.

It would be recalled that President Buhari in his second term acceptance speech, said that the ‘Next Level’ governance will be tough to looters.

Kalu has been taken to Prison and he has joined the like of Joshua Dariye a senator from Plateau State who was a former governor of Plateau State.

Many are hoping that Kalu will appealed the judgement, that he cannot be in jail for 12 years.

However, Kalu is also a chieftaincy titled holder in Daura, Buhari’s village as many as still of the opined that the corruption war is selective.
