The immediate past governor of Imo state, Owelle Rochas Okorocha is another MKO Abiola who just received his certificate of return after the 9th senate has been sworn in.
The former governor contested senatorial election to represent Imo west senatorial district on the platform of All Progressive Congress APC, the party he formed and also served as the governor.
The senator-elect, won the election and was announced winner by the electoral officer (Returning officer) and was returned elected, but the returning officer alleged that he announced him (Rochas) winner under duress.
The Independence National Electoral Commission (INEC) took a decision that was strange to the law, and she became judge in her own case.
The rest of the stories are now history because the certificate of return has been issued to Rochas but he has not been sworn-in yet.
Just like MKO Abiola who election that won election that is still referred as the most free and fair elections in Nigeria was denied the victorious declaration by General Ibrahim Babangida, the then head of state.
Abiola was not taken to court for his victory to be tried, the election was simply annulled on no grounds and Nigerians through President Muhammadu Buhari is now realizing that that day of annulment should be celebrated as a democracy day.
The Independent National Electoral Commission on Tuesday issued a Certificate of Return to Rochas Okorocha as winner of the recent election in Imo West Senatorial District District.
Immediately after he received the certificate of return, the embattled senator-elect for Imo west senatorial district, Rochas Okorocha informed the journalist that he was invited by INEC to come and collect his certificate of return immediately after the inauguration.
“At exactly 6.14 pm, this (Tuesday) evening, after the inauguration of the 9th National Assembly, I was invited that my certificate is ready and I have just gone to collect it. I take it to be God’s time. I have always believed that justice delayed is justice denied, but all for the sake of our nation, I accepted it”, he stated.
He thanked the judiciary for doing the needful, to defend our democracy.
“I also want to thank INEC for taking this bold step against all odds by issuing my Certificate of Return, which goes a long way to confirm that the allegation of duress is not founded by delay tactics by my detractors to have slowed down the process. I believe this is God’s time and I take it as God’s time. I am happy that finally the matter is resolved. Okorocha said.
He said though he was not part of the inauguration, he will joined his colleague and will be inaugurated now that “I have the certificate I have the opportunity to join my colleagues to see how to move Nigeria forward”.
Daily Tells understands that Okorocha’s followers believes that there are some forces in the government and the party (APC) that are afraid of Rochas because they thought that he would have won the Senate president of the 9th assembly to boost his political profile and influence.
They also believed that Rochas will be the force to contend with when it comes to presidency in 2023, so they are doing everything humanly possible to stop him from not excelling.
Meanwhile, Senator Ahmed Lawan has won the senate president as the Deputy has shifted from south east (Ike Ekweremadu) to south south (Omo-Agege).
