El-Rufai Condemned Zoning ahead of 2023

The Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai condemned the idea of zoning of political offices and urge Nigerians to abandoned such in favour of competence.

El-Rufai unclothed his thoughts in an exceedingly message titled, ‘Defeating a Determined Incumbent – The Nigerian Experience’, that is a topic he contributed to a book – Power of Possibilities and Politics of Change
in African nation – written by the Director-General of the Progressives Governors Forum, Salihu Lukman.

As 2023 elections in sight, there is an insinuation about the Southern part of Nigeria to produce the next president, having President Muhammadu Buhari from the North currently serving his second term.

Notably, that some key political offices at state levels are also shared among the various ethnic groups or zones in each state.

However El-Rufai has now described the zoning of political offices as a barrier to political equality.

He said, “Even the success we recorded in 2015 general elections, there is need for improvement.

He further stressed that, “Barriers to political equality, such as our seemingly entrenched though informal rule for zoning candidacies according to regions, religion of origin, need to be de-emphasized and
ultimately abandoned in favour of an emphasis on qualification, competence and character.

“The funding of political parties, candidates and campaigns remains opaque.

“Most African countries are marked by savage inequalities, unethical and a handful of individuals have the wherewithal to hold the process hostage.

“We must work towards funding parties through capped and fully disclosed donations and annual dues payable by every registered party member.”

Daily Tells can recall that El-Rufai had called on how to end god fatherism in Lagos politics and now he also kicked against zoning of political offices and condemned it in totality
