Aniekan Uko Urges Oil Companies and other companies operating in the State to first Considered Akwa Ibom Youths in any Employment.
The former Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly (AKHA) Rt. Hon. (Elder) Aniekan Uko, made a case for Akwa Ibom youths on employment as he sponsored a motion in the 7th Assembly for all the Companies Operating in the State to start their Employments with Akwa Ibom Indigenes first before considering others.
Uko, while speaking at the plenary, Tuesday 26, on “The need to Consider the Employment of Indigenous Youths by the Companies Operating in Akwa Ibom State” reminded his colleagues about the Nigeria Oil and gas Industry Content Development Act, (Local Content Law)
He also cited the Presidential order that was signed in 2018, which encourages Promotion of Nigerian Content in contracts and Science, Engineering and Technology, with direct ministries, Department and Agencies.
The lawmaker also recalled that the 6th Assembly had passed into law a bill that compelled companies doing business in the State to hire at least 10% of their Senior Staff from the State and 70% of the workers from the youths in the State.
Elder Uko, reiterated that if the Youths are gainfully employed by these companies, social vices and Kidnapping will be curbed.
The legislator thanked Governor Udom Emmanuel on his “industrial revolution” where he claimed to have established 13 industries in his tenure to tackled unemployment in the State.
Aniekan Uko resolved in his motion with the following to be considered:
“That all Companies Operating in the State to adhere to all extant laws and regulations relating to employment of Indigenous persons.
He also “urges the relevant Ministries of effectively monitor the extent of employment of Local persons by companies operating in the State.
He concluded by mandating “the supervising ministries to ensure that Companies signed and undertaking during contracts signing to abide by laws and regulations relating to the employment of indigenous persons”.
Rt. Hon. Aniekan Uko is a Member representing Ibesikpo Asutan State Constituency in Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.
He is a former Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, AKHA, in the 6th Assembly, Succeeded by Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke.
