Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Suspended Abak LG Chairman Indefinitely (Full Details)



Elder Imoh Williams reinstated

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has suspended the chairman of Abak Local Government Area, Mr. Imoh Williams, indefinitely over an alleged assault to one Mr Godwin Abraham.


The suspension came 12 hours after the governor had directed the State Assembly to investigate allegation of human rights abuse against the chairman of Abak Local Government which the video of maltreatment against Goodwin Abraham has gone viral.


Rt. Hon. Uduak Ududoh, member representing Ikot Abasi/Eastern Obolo state constituency, brought the motion before floor of the house.


Hon. Uduak who brought the motion said ”the video has gone viral and it is very embarrassing to the government of Udom Emmanuel, the House of Assembly and all right thinking people of Akwa Ibom state.


He, therefore, submitted that “the alleged actor in the video suspected to be the chairman of Abak LGA Elder Imo Williams has questions to answer since the assault took place in the local government council secretariat.”


The 25 members of the Akwa Ibom State house of assembly (all PDP) were all present at the plenary and all condemned the actions the chairman from the said video.


They all resolved that the chairman must be suspended immediately for investigation to be carried out and report same to the house within a stipulated time.


It was on this note the Leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Udo Kierian, moved the motion to pass the resolution to suspend the Chairman of Abak LGA indefinitely while the vice Chairman Mrs Benita Ukpe, to take over as Acting Chairman while waiting for the final outcome of the investigation.


The House through the leadership of Mr. Speaker, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey also directed the vice Chairman of the Local government Lady Benita Ukpe to take over the affairs of the council in an acting capacity until investigation into the matter is concluded.


However, the motion also referred the matter to the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs chaired by Rt. Hon. Mark Esset, to report back to the House within one month.


The house through their motion also urged the Nigerian Police force to look into the criminal aspect of the allegation and bring all culprits involved to book.


Deputy Leader of the House, Rt. Hon. (Bar) Aniefiok Akpan and member representing Etinan state constituency, seconded the motion.


Finally, the honorable Speaker, Mr Aniekan Bassey, directed the Clerk of the House, Mrs Mandu Umoren to forward the resolution of the House to all the authorities concerned for necessary actions.


However, Mr. Imoh williams, has been suspended as the executive Chairman of Abak Local Government by Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly. The suspension takes immediate effects as directed by the state assembly.


Daily Tells, can recall that the governor of the state, Mr. Udom Emmanuel had condemned the action that took place in Abak Local Government Area and ordered the House of Assembly to wade into the matter.


Udom’s Statement Reads

“I roundly condemn the assault that took place at Abak Local Government Council, currently circulating on the social media.

“Such actions are unacceptable in a civilized society and do not represent our core values in the state.

“I have advised the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly to commence full investigations into the matter.”
